Ukraine as a country is going through a certain type of political and social upheaval over the course of 2019. In recent years the celebration of LGBT pride takes place globally during the month of June. While many Western nations such as the United States and England can parade blocks of major cities in celebration without being in constant fear of their lives. The celebration of LGBT Pride in Ukraine creates a divide between the self-proclaimed right-wing “nationalists” and those simply trying to celebrate their being. What is interesting to note from Ukraine’s recent Equality March is they encompass multiple human rights issues in their parade not solely as a celebration of the LGBT community. It is also important to note during Ukraine’s 2019 Equality March is that they had the largest turnout from their previous three parades with almost five thousand attendees. It is also relevant to note that some people attended the 2019 March to protest the violence and threat of violence to the paraders. While a surge in participation is apparent, the opposition against the LGBT community, in particular, highlights the entrenched homophobia rooted in traditional Ukrainian culture. It will be interesting to watch if and how Ukrainian society can overthrow their entrenched gerontocracy and hopefully as a result can evolve from their previous hyper-nationalistic and in turn homophobic tradition.
